Draft of 2015-2030 Elk Management Plan.

Since being introduced in 1997, elk have thrived in eastern Kentucky. High breeding and calf survival rates, the absence of predators, mild winters and abundant food sources support an expanding herd and elk which are on average 15% larger than elk found in western states.

For 2016 - 2017 season, the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission issued 900 permits, in addition to 10 youth-only permits. Bull: 150 firearms and 100 archery-crossbow permits. Cow: 400 firearms permits and 250 archery-crossbow permits. Hunters had a choice of 5 areas to hunt in a 16 county region.

Start planning now for 2017, the lottery application period runs from January 1 to April 30, 2017.
