Whitetail Deer FAQ's
Q. Is OMM Outfitters a full-time operation or a sideline?
OMM Outfitters is a full-time commitment for us both during the hunting season and off season. Deer production year after year does not just happen. It is the result of consistent year-round work in research, and game and habitat management. We want to be sure that we have done everything humanly possible to ensure that the deer are here when you are! No matter how you cut it a part-time guide just cannot give a full-time commitment.
Q. How knowledgeable is my guide about the game I am seeking?
OMM Guides are experts on White Tail Deer. Remember, if hunting is your objective, make sure your guide knows the game you are after.
Q. Is my guide properly licensed?
You may think this is a foolish question. But, believe me, the time to check it out is before you book a hunt. As a Maine Guide, OMM Outfitters holds the highest degree of Guide License awarded by the State of Maine.
Q. What about a "guaranteed kill"?
OMM Outfitters does not guarantee a kill any more than you could guarantee a kill when you shoot. However, OMM Outfitters does guarantee that we will make every effort to make your hunt a success and your visit a memorable one. Although a "guaranteed kill" may seem attractive at first glance, experienced hunters who return to hunt with us year after year realized there is no free lunch. OMM Outfitters invests the time and resources, year-round to build a productive deer-producing territory.
Q. What about skinning and taxidermy?
You kill 'em and we will take care of the rest. We will skin out your deer and prepare it for your trip home at no extra charge. We have freezer equipment for proper storage of your trophy. We work closely with several reputable taxidermists and we can handle making all the necessary arrangements, if you wish. There are no hidden charges, nor any special trophy fees at OMM Outfitters.
Q. Does OMM Outfitters make its references available?
Our reference list is included on this website. We at OMM outfitters urge you to contact any one of our hunters, and to always insist on references from any guide you consider.
Q. What Do I need for my hunt with OMM Outfitters?
Check out our What to Bring Page.
Q. What types of accommodations will I have?
Almost any kind you want! We offer a choice of accommodations to match the preference of our individual hunters. From housekeeping cabins and tenting to a complete set-up with all meals included, we're ready for you. The details are in the Lodging section and of course if you have any other questions just give us a call.
Q. Do I need a Four-wheel drive vehicle?
NO. You will want and need a vehicle, but a car will work. However, an SUV or a vehicle that has a bit of ground clearance under it will work out best.
Hunting Tips
- Scout early and obtain landowner permission, whenever possible.
- Look for deer in wet areas along streams, swamps and lakes during hot, dry weather.
- Hunt during mid-day. Big bucks often move at this time.
- Look for the most nutritious foods currently available in your hunting area. Deer will be nearby.
- When you locate doe and fawn family groups, bucks will be there too, anytime in November.
Hunting in the North Country is rugged, miles and miles of woods with logging operations always in progress. To be successful in the North Country you need experienced Guides who can read and speak the language of the whitetail. OMM is set up in the North Country to meet the needs of the hunters with great accommodations. The primary way of hunting is overlooking large woods or grown up spruce cuts. The whitetail success rate can be very good if the hunter has the patience to sit all day. OMM also offers an expanded bow hunt from September to December where the hunter can harvest unlimited does and one buck in the southern regions of Maine on privately owned land. This is an afternoon hunt that is a very fun and action packed.
