Maine Bear Hunts - FAQ's

Maine Black Bear HuntingQ. What are OMM’s hunting methods during the bear hunting season?
We use bait to attract and hold large black bears. Afternoons are the most productive times for hunting the black bear.

Q. What are the arrival and departure times?
Typically our hunting trips are 5 days of hunting. Sunday hunting is prohibited in Maine. Arrival will be on Sunday and departure will be the following Saturday. Check-in time is after 12 noon. Check-out is before 10 am.

Q. How many bait sites are used and how much area is covered?
OMM has been researching the black bears in our areas and have determined the best areas for trophy black bear. We have invested many hours into landowner relations and have acquired many acres of excellent private hunting ground as well as timber company and State lands. We run approximately 100 bait sites for the 25 - 40 hunters we expect each year. This helps us to manage certain areas for better quality bears.

Q. What is the "wounding policy"?
Abundant practice with your weapon of choice, and from elevated stands, is recommended well before the season starts. If you wound a bear, you may continue to hunt that same bait for the remainder of the week. If you wound a second bear, the hunt is over. If you wish to be moved to another stand after wounding a bear, and one is available, a $500 fee applies. This does not mean you'll be hunting one bait site for the entire week. You will be hunting productive bait sites and we move hunters to different locations as appropriate.

Q. Meat care?
OMM will transport the bear to the butcher shop for skinning, butchering, and freezing. The cost for butchering runs from $125 to $400.

Q. Is internet access available?
Yes, at the sporting camps, we have high speed internet and VOIP telephone service.

Q. What is the hunters per guide ratio?
Early in the week we may have as many as 4 to 5 clients per guide.

Q. What are the best weeks to hunt?
We are fortunate to have a large enough area that we do not have to use the same sites more than once in a season. So, whichever week you book promises to be an adventure. As a rule of thumb, we generally see more bears earlier in the season. However, the average size does increase as the season progresses. The first and second weeks sells out first.

Q. What is the success rate?
Success rates are high and are determined by the skill of our clients and their personal goals for a trophy. Most hunters will see bears.

Clients are only posted on active bait sites. However, we have no control over what hunters do on the stand, or their ability to sit still and be quiet and observant. We also cannot control their shooting capabilities. With all that said, we consistently rank above the state average and typically send upwards of 80% of our hunter’s home with a bear. Most that do not fill a tag have one or more close encounters with a bruin.

Q. Weather/ Climate during hunt?
Maine is known for rapid weather changes. Conditions for each week will vary. Temperatures average in the 40's at night and upper 60's during the day. However, be prepared for very warm and very cold weather.

Q. Do you supply vehicles or will I be driving my own?
We will drive most hunters to their hunting location. Some prefer to take their own vehicle and that may be an option. You can discuss this with your guide.
